Due online and in stores on Nov 11, This Angry Pen of Mine: Recovering the Lost Journals of Layne Staley, features not only lost journal entries from the late Alice in Chains front man, rare photos, artwork and poetry from Layne will also be included. To get fans just a little more juiced up for the release, a teaser was dropped showing what is believed to be alternate lyrics from an early draft of the AIC classic ‘I Stay Away’.
Both the versions start the same with the opening lines below:
Yeah, hey, I want to travel south this year
Ah, woah, woah, won’t prevent safe passage here.
That’s where things take a turn with the recorded version containing the chorus:
Why you act crazy?
Not an act, maybe
So close, a lady
Shifty eyes, shady
And the early version of the chorus looking like this:
Why you always tracking around
Points are in a trail on the ground
Another sick room with your name
The trauma’s just a play in the game
There were also apparently additional lyrics that Staley crossed out that had to do with “strength in voice” and “masturbation.”
