CHECK OUT THE MID IOWA ROLLERS!
October 1, 2009
I have a heavy heart today...radio legend Dic Youngs died just hours after his 68th birthday had passed. Youngsy was a kind, warm man and his soul was fed by all the listeners and fans who tuned in to hear him every day. He had an unbelievable memory, and I'm sure there's plenty of fans who feel like they had a personal relationship with Dic, even if they'd only met a few times, because he could recall names and places and stories unlike anyone I've ever met. I envy him for his unparalled enthusiasm for this profession, even as it changed so drastically around him. Dic, you will be missed, and I'm so glad I took the time to let you know how much you meant to me. Thanks for turning me on, Youngsy.

Okay, it's been SOOO long since I updated my blog that's it's DISAPPEARED!!! What have I done in the 3+ months since I wrote everything down...not much. (HA HA!) I vacationed on Long Island in July, and laid on the beach in the ritzy town of East Hampton, New York. Before going back to Iowa I stopped in Boston to take my cousin Samantha and her new husband Eric to a Red Sox game, and I saw some new friends, John and Stacey, that I met last summer. Sam and Eric saw a Red Sox win, and thanks to John and Stacey I got to tour the INSIDE of the Green Monster at Fenway Park!! It was amazing! Hundreds of players have signed the inside of the wall, and there was a line from a Tom Petty movie on the inside, "The waiting is the hardest part". Ask a Cub fan, the waiting IS the hardest part!! It's rumored Manny Ramirez used to retire to the inside of the Monster to eat a sandwich and go to the bathroom DURING THE GAME. Let it be noted there isn't a bathroom there....ewww.
When I got back it was already getting close to state fair time...where does the time go?? I went to all the rock shows at the fair, starting with Frampton. Besides "Do You Feel" my favorite song from the show was when Frampton ripped into Black Hole Sun by Soundgarden!! Somehow I ended up at the Big and Rich concert (I know, I know!!) Hey, thanks to the guys from KJJY I ended up on Big Kenny's tour bus...not every day you can say that! I watched Brian James take a swig out of a jar containing some sort of homemade moonshine, watched a video or two of Kenny's, and partied like I was on a big-time tour bus. Then it was on to Bret Michaels...always good to see him, plus his bodyguard Big John is a big sweetheart! He stopped by the Rock Shop to say hi to listeners and be on the radio, just like he promised, plus some lucky ladies got to be onstage during Bret's show. Bret also took a lot of time to greet fans and some of us backstage after the show, and you won't find a more down-to-earth guy in rock. I really enjoyed watching an old friend of mine from college meet Bret...Brad is the BIGGEST Poison fan and he was just beside himself all night! There's some perks to doing this job, and making someone's day is one of them.
After the fair, I went to a couple of Cubs-Mets games in Chicago with friends. A big thanks to my friend Kim, who happens to know people who work for the New York Mets. She's cool (for a Mets fan) and the Cubs even won a game!! "Maybe next year" is a phrase I'm getting sick of saying, yet I am...again.
And finally...I got a puppy! His name is Cooper and he's completely adorable. He's on the video player on the front page of the website, check him out!! I will be talking MUCH more about him, I'm sure. Until next time (I promise, it will be sooner than later!!), thanks for listening!
